Readiness for Midwifery Practice in Canada Self Assessment Tool
Readiness for Midwifery Practice in Canada

SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL

This self-assessment tool is designed to help internationally-educated midwives understand the Canadian midwifery profession and what midwives in Canada are expected to know and do. It outlines the competencies, knowledge and skills that midwives must have to be eligible to apply for registration and be ready to practice in a Canadian province or territory.

The tool contains two sections:

  • PART I provides an overview of the Canadian model of midwifery practice and the professional and lifestyle realities you need to consider.

  • PART II provides a questionnaire for you to self-assess your knowledge and skills in relation to Canadian midwifery competency requirements.

Please note that this self-assessment tool is intended only as a guide for your personal use, so that you can identify areas where you feel confident and/or any gaps where you might need additional knowledge and skills. This tool will not be used to formally assess your professional competency. Your answers to questions will not be recorded or evaluated by anyone other than yourself.

If/when you apply for midwifery registration in Canada, you will be required to take part in a formal assessment and bridging program to ensure that your knowledge and skills meet Canadian standards. This process includes interviews, language fluency tests, written and oral/clinical examinations, orientation sessions, and courses to remedy competency gaps.
